Stop Press. Ajax have signed Mido on a free transfer from Middlesbrough, pending Mido's work permit. He will not be eligible to play against PAOK in the Champions League.

Stop hot press. It should be noted Mido is expected to arrive in Amsterdam this week to discuss personal terms and his position within the selection.

Martin Jol, coaching Mido during his spell with Tottenham Hotspur, is quoted as saying:

Mido wants to help us out and we shall have to establish how we can help Mido

The delicacy of irony, Mido and Jol share the same agent, Mino Raiola.

With a career spanning a record number of transfers in Europe, Mido managed to only score one memorable goal for Egypt as far as I'm concerned (against Senegal).

Ajax have confirmed the signing of former Middlesbrough striker Mido on a one-year contract.

Mido, 27, was allowed to leave Boro on a free transfer as he was considered surplus to requirements and, having spent time at Ajax from 2001 to 2003, he has agreed a deal to return to Amsterdam.

Boss Martin Jol told the club's official website: "We needed an extra striker and we have limited resources which have to be considered."

Mido spent time on loan with West Ham last season and has also played for Celta Vigo, Marseille, Roma, Tottenham, Wigan and Zamalek.

Met with mixed feeling amongst Ajax-faithful...
