The persistent theme of funding - no betting allowed!!
It takes a country like Egypt to have such a football thirsty population of millions and yet not enough funding for football. Well, the problem as I see it is the lack of a systematic and constant flow of cash to clubs - of course. Well, the answer is very simple: allow the Egyptians to bet on their football games. Only the entire world is doing it. So what is the problem? Betting is not allowed due to Islamic doctrine, it is 'haram'. A football fan goes out on the weekend, buys a betting card out of his own free will and picks victory for his club. His action gives people jobs and improves a whole nation's economy. But, no..it is evil - and only God knows why. Yet we have to be our usual schizophrenic selves: we are betting on horse racing. In fact we are betting on football on private Egyptian TV channels where the viewer gets a cash prize for his/her correct prediction of winner or loser. Maybe one day the tricky question of whether to improve our sports facilities, clubs, players - or not, is finally given considerable thought.

Would it be 'halal' to bet against the odds of ones' favorite club and profit from a defeat?

No Sir, you cannot fool God. He can see you and he's just waiting for you to commit the 'B' word. The act itself will degrade your soul and turn it into a rotten marshmallow.
